Each site identified through the strategic inspection process will be screened using GIS tools to give a score, based on the known historical land use, current land use and groundwater conditions. This will identify sites where potentially significant contamination is present and where harm is most likely to occur. These sites are reviewed in detail by the Council’s Environmental Protection Officers, to refine the score and form the basis of a prioritisation list.

The prioritisation process allows the Council to identify and bring sites forward for detailed inspection, where appropriate.

The strategic inspection process can be lengthy. Therefore, detailed inspections do not need to wait for this process to complete. Sites considered to pose higher risks will always be prioritised for investigation.

The Council’s prioritised aims in dealing with contaminated land will be to:

  • protect human health; and
  • protect controlled waters
  • prevent damage to property; livestock and crops etc.
  • protect designated ecosystems
  • prevent further contamination of land

Priority will be afforded to sites where there is a risk of harm to human health, including contamination of controlled waters.
