The Council would like more people to be supported into paid employment opportunities. At present, there is limited support for people who attend day services to learn new skills and access paid employment or volunteering. We would work with providers and businesses to provide opportunities that will support people to learn and develop employment skills, and independent life skills and confidence. For example, working within an office, shop or café, so they can be rewarded for their work.

We have provided an example to help explain what this idea would mean to people using day services. This example is not based on a real person, it is only provided to help illustrate this idea.

What happens currently for people who use our services

Emma can access some life skill development support based on her ability for paid employment or volunteering.

What this would look like in the future for people who use our services

Emma would have more opportunities to learn new skills by working with a provider who will support and develop her skills and this could lead to her being paid a salary for her work, in Council-owned buildings and other local businesses. For example, an office-based job, working within a supermarket or in a local coffee shop.
