To further the growth of locally rooted worker co-ops in Cheshire West by developing a hub resource to provide specialist advice and support

A community wealth building strategy, worker co-ops could be developed to provide services procured by anchor institutions (such as CWAC) to the benefit of the local economy. Democratically organised workplaces are empowering, productive and ethical organisations that seek to add value and benefit to the local and the wider global community.

Have a dedicated 'Hub' in all towns which allows single point access to all local Community Groups, Charities and Voluntary Organistations

I started up and run the Uniform Exchange Winsford, a place for people to donate pre loved school uniform, shoes and coats that can then be passed onto other families in need within the local community. There are so many fantastic groups, charities and organisations offering different types of help to families that having a central hub to allow single point access to all services required would assist so much. Currently community groups are overlapping where they don't need too because they are unaware of the services they can offer. Having a centralised community focal point which can advertise all services and offer assistance would be really beneficial. Ideally working with the local Council and businesses allowing access to much needed resources and facilities.

    NHS Dental Provision

There is a national shortage of local NHS dental provision which has been exacerbated by COVID and associated infection risks. Winsford residents are being asked to travel to Sandbach for NHS dentistry and for low income residents this creates unfair affordability and time-wastage. Communities where dental and other health risks are already raised should be prioritised for improved access urgently. Can we as a Council advocate for this as a ‘recovery’ policy within the Health and Wellbeing Board and with the CCG?

Winsford to Chester and Winsford to Leighton Public/Affordable Transport

There are many problems for Winsford Community residents with hospital visiting and appointments as well as in accessing work and study as a result of significant gaps in public transport provision. Community ownership and prioritising the health and employment needs of those at greatest risk of poverty and unemployment should be part of how we recover.

Establish a new Working Group to map out realistic local living costs and examine what constitutes quality and sustainable employment.

Establish a new Working Group to map out realistic local living costs and examine what constitutes quality and sustainable employment.

This group could sit within the Poverty Truth Advisory Board, assess what the support/resource needs may be in identifying opportunities within the private sector but also with regards to Council contract renewal in re-shaping the local economy alongside dedicated Eco-Community Co-Op Hubs. Community-ownership, particularly forms based on flatter pay structures such as http://belfastcleaningsociety.com, can play their part in providing a meaningful route out of the crisis of low income and are an extremely positive, empowering means of galvanising local people within low income communities around shared projects that address local need. They have potential to re-build participation, confidence and viable incomes in more environmentally sustainable ways.

Provide dedicated spaces in low income communities to bolster against the economic and health crises

Provide dedicated spaces in low income communities to bolster against the economic and health crises

These could be low-cost eco-builds that provide a base for communities to increase their knowledge and confidence in tackling the issues that directly affect them, inviting in expertise to help explore and implement solutions to the crisis that best meet the new and evolving needs of the community in relation to low income, climate, health, hunger, education, democratic voice, tackling anti-social behaviour and community safety etc. They could be managed by communities and be a home for resident-led, council and partner-supported community wealth-building, rather than part of an ‘outreach’ service.

Collect better data on poverty and lobby government on poverty where necessary. +2.5 million unemployed by Christmas

Collect better data on poverty and lobby government on poverty where necessary. +2.5 million unemployed by Christmas

Closely track disproportionate impacts of the dual crises of the economic downturn that has since been compounded by COVID, on those on already low incomes and on those newly tipped into poverty, whether working or unemployed/on benefits. Where we are constrained and unable to meet needs arising from disproportionate impacts on low income communities, we must at the very least work with others to flag this up with Government and keep communities informed that we have done this.

    Just do something

One of the better aspects of the pandemic has been people looking out for neighbours and offering help. Sometimes we can all be too backwards at asking for, or offering help from friends and neighbours. So many things that sounds small add up to bigger things. We can't all do eveything, but we should all try to: support local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, vote, give blood, recycle, home compost, walk or cycle short journeys, pick up some roadside litter ocasionally, talk to people, join a local group or society and so on.

    More supported volunteering

The Council needs to invest more in volunteer organisers, for example Green Space Rangers so that more volunteer hours can be effectively managed. This will have the added benefit of reducing demand on health and social care are members of the community will also have improved health and wellbeing
