COVID-19 will have long term impacts on us all. It has brought new challenges for our health, for society and for the economy. Cheshire West and Chester Council are developing plans to overcome these challenges and build a stronger future for our borough and we want your help.
Our response to the pandemic has been about togetherness – individuals and communities acting together to do the right thing and support each other. We want that to continue through our recovery and a conversation with you about how we shape the future.
- What do you think is most important to focus on to build a stronger future for everyone in the borough?
- How do you think the Council could help make this happen?
- How do you think you and your community could help make this happen?
Please share your ideas with us on the ideas boards below. Alternatively, if you would prefer to share your views privately, you can answer the same questions in our online survey.
This engagement exercise will close on 17 September 2020
The feedback we have received so far is already making a difference by helping to inform the local plans we are developing, to work together, to build a stronger future. What you tell us here will be used to help shape our Stronger Futures plan, which will be published this autumn.
Further opportunities to have your say include a consultation on our budget plans, which will start in October 2020, to ensure we have the money to deliver our plans for a stronger future and tackle our financial challenge.

Cllr Lynn Rileyover 3 years agoRe-sign communities to help boost walking and cycling
Simple re-signing at key locations in communities can signpost walking routes(with distance+time). Many don’t know about the simple shortcuts for walking & cycling. Govt £ should be spent on the small things 1st and the bigger schemes once you’ve built demand
1MarkSalmost 4 years agoBetter wayfinding signs on the walls
The walls can be an excellent way to get around the city but there needs to be more wayfinding signs to help people come off at the right part.

I live in Delamere. Our community centre is used twice a week as a post office at the moment and for nothing else, and I'm sure this is the case in other places in Cheshire West. It would be great if we could establish a network of community centre hubs across the region that would open up once or twice a week for a few hours, providing food to local people for free. People over the age of 70, and families whose children would normally receive free school lunches, for example. I'm sure local businesses would love to help out. Food would be takeaway only, and ready to go in carrier bags. Social distancing would be stringently observed, and volunteers would wear masks and gloves.
4Alex Bellover 3 years agoMake cycling an option for Cheshire West residents
As someone who regularly cycles around Chester, I understand we are lucky to possess green arteries such as the Greenway and the canal which offer brilliant walking and cycling opportunities within the city. However, I am disappointed that little has been done to capitalise on these two brilliant corridors in terms of their potential to reduce car use. Cycle paths in Chester all too often end abruptly and the cycle routes given are useless due to busy roads and poor surfaces. I have to cross the A41 and A51 every day on the way to school with no signal control protection. The greenhouse gas emissions in numerous cities had fallen sharply during lockdown and although it isn't the only factor, the fall in traffic was a huge contributor to this. However, as lockdown has been eased, car use has once again picked up and it doesn't appear the necessary swift action has been taken to utilise the opportunity lockdown provided and permanently reduce traffic in the city. Over 1/2 car journeys in the UK are less than 5 miles, a distance that is easily walk able or cycle able (unless carrying large amounts). I feel a large contributor to such high amounts of driving over these distances is because many are scared to cycle. Therefore, we must create proper cycle lanes, increase cycle safety measures at road crossings (such as cycle boxes and toucan crossings) and allow more regular crossing slots for cyclists at junctions. Given over 60% of UK adults are overweight or obese, this could be hugely beneficial for the health of our community, not to mention the fact that cycling will be central to the UK government's plan to tackle obesity. In addition to this, people could be reducing their carbon footprints by choosing to walk/cycle within Chester with road space reserved for those who have no other option than to use the car.
0city residentalmost 4 years agoLook after the City's Trees
An entrance to Grosvenor Park is currently closed due to a dangerous tree. This is a small consequence of general lack of tree maintenance in the City. The saddest example is the overgrown holly tree avenues in Grosvenor Park, a defining feature of the park since Victorian days. As hollies only leaf on the outer layer we may have already lost the chance to save this invaluable feature seriously degrading Grosvenor Park, only a few years after spending over a million pounds of lottery money on the same area. A similar example is the lime trees by the river which were donated to the City generations ago, recently they are starting to lose their shape and are seldom pruned. The riverside walk behind the racecourse is partly blocked by a fallen tree and the footpath between the railway and the racecourse is partly blocked with weeds and hedges. More resources to maintain the City's trees will help preserve our environment. That will encourage people to walk and cycle. We can get better value for money by maintaining what we have, not just by building new.

Tinalmost 4 years agoMake use of the largenumber of empty shops in our town centres to provide places where people can meet up to share interests and activities.
Bring together volunteers and people who need support to get out and about to make this open to all and help reduce loneliness as well as bringing town centres to life again.
4GailAnnalmost 4 years agoGraveyards
Our graveyard at St Laurence Church is closed and adopted by Cheshire West. Frequent concerns are expressed about its tidiness and grass length. Is it possible that local people could be encouraged to work with Cheshire West rather than being reliant on them? Could the insurance be sorted to allow that to happen?
1Cllr Mandy Clareover 3 years agoProvide dedicated spaces in low income communities to bolster against the economic and health crises
These could be low-cost eco-builds that provide a base for communities to increase their knowledge and confidence in tackling the issues that directly affect them, inviting in expertise to help explore and implement solutions to the crisis that best meet the new and evolving needs of the community in relation to low income, climate, health, hunger, education, democratic voice, tackling anti-social behaviour and community safety etc. They could be managed by communities and be a home for resident-led, council and partner-supported community wealth-building, rather than part of an ‘outreach’ service.
3GailAnnalmost 4 years agoAccessible access map
Produce a walkers map that shows where there are still stiles. I find some really difficult and it’s frustrating when a route has to change because I can’t over the stile. The ideal would be for all stiles to be replaced by gates. Some areas of CWAC are better than others.
2Sevalmost 4 years agoClimate change measures as a priority
In the link related to the question what is most important to build a stronger future, there are many ideas linked to climate and protecting the environment. Supporting local businesses, local food, invest on low energy public transport, review insulation standards for buildings to reduce energy, invest in rain water collection , invest in technologies that will allow safe use of grey water, enforce a motor off policy on car parks, all would help in reducing carbon emissions. Then it would be great to identify the future jobs needed to support these actions and review the education needs to achieve this.

Jamesalmost 4 years agoJust do something
One of the better aspects of the pandemic has been people looking out for neighbours and offering help. Sometimes we can all be too backwards at asking for, or offering help from friends and neighbours. So many things that sounds small add up to bigger things. We can't all do eveything, but we should all try to: support local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, vote, give blood, recycle, home compost, walk or cycle short journeys, pick up some roadside litter ocasionally, talk to people, join a local group or society and so on.
3Gordonalmost 4 years agoMore supported volunteering
The Council needs to invest more in volunteer organisers, for example Green Space Rangers so that more volunteer hours can be effectively managed. This will have the added benefit of reducing demand on health and social care are members of the community will also have improved health and wellbeing
