The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays. This year, the Summer Reading Challenge’s Silly Squad will celebrate funny books, happiness and laughter. The Challenge will run to mid-September.

There are lots of ways you can get involved:

  • Find out about the great stuff you can join in, for free, over the summer, like storytellers and live dance classes by selecting Online events
  • Be in with a chance to win a £20 book token by entering one of our competitions by selecting Competitions:
  • Listen to or post a truly terrible joke or learn how to craft by clicking on Crafts and Jokes

Below are some ideas for some fun things you can make this Summer and some truly terrible jokes from library staff. Do you recognise any? And can you do better? 

Feel free to post craft ideas or jokes below. This is just for fun so no prizes for this one apart from knowing you’ve shared a craft idea or made someone laugh (or groan!).

    Archaeologist’s notebook – Freddie in The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates (by Jenny Pearson) loves facts. So do archaeologists! Make and fill in your own mini notebook with facts about an interesting object you’ve found.

    How to make your Archaeologist's notebook:

    • Choose 'Fit to page' when you print out the notebook, then trim the white border off all four sides of the print out.
    • Fold the sheet of paper into 8 equal sections along the lines which say 'fold'. Open it back out again afterwards.

    Get a head - How to make your very own Silly Squad head

    Materials

    Balloon, Newspaper (roughly torn into small pieces), PVA glue, Water, Vaselene, Large bowl, Small tray or shallow container, Paint Brush, Clothes peg, Piece of wire shaped to make a hook / loop, Poster Paints, Piece of ribbon or string.

    Instructions

    You will get messy so make sure you wear old clothes!


    1) Cover the surface you are working on with a plastic sheet or old paper.

    2) In a small tray or shallow container mix the PVA glue and water together - 2 parts PVA glue to 1 part water.
