There is significant evidence linking experiences in the early years to later health outcomes. Inequalities in the early years have lifelong impacts, and interventions to improve health and wellbeing during this time have been shown to be cost effective and yield significant returns on investment.

The following proposed priorities have been identified as a focus to improve these inequalities:

a) Increasing the uptake of breastfeeding

b) Improving children’s oral health

c) Improving readiness for school

d) Improving perinatal (from becoming pregnant to a year after giving birth), children and young people’s mental health

e) Increasing the uptake of vaccinations

f) Delivering the Families First programme, which aims to transform children’s social care by prioritising early intervention and family support.
