COVID-19 will have long term impacts on us all. It has brought new challenges for our health, for society and for the economy. Cheshire West and Chester Council are developing plans to overcome these challenges and build a stronger future for our borough and we want your help.
Our response to the pandemic has been about togetherness – individuals and communities acting together to do the right thing and support each other. We want that to continue through our recovery and a conversation with you about how we shape the future.
- What do you think is most important to focus on to build a stronger future for everyone in the borough?
- How do you think the Council could help make this happen?
- How do you think you and your community could help make this happen?
Please share your ideas with us on the ideas boards below. Alternatively, if you would prefer to share your views privately, you can answer the same questions in our online survey.
This engagement exercise will close on 17 September 2020
The feedback we have received so far is already making a difference by helping to inform the local plans we are developing, to work together, to build a stronger future. What you tell us here will be used to help shape our Stronger Futures plan, which will be published this autumn.
Further opportunities to have your say include a consultation on our budget plans, which will start in October 2020, to ensure we have the money to deliver our plans for a stronger future and tackle our financial challenge.

During lockdown lots more people took the opportunity to exercise, walk and cycle. We now have more safe cycle routes which are great, but you continue to under invest in our parks and green spaces which have been so well used during lockdown, we had Rangers in our parks and park keepers and over the last 10 year they have declined. We are seeing some recent improvements, but still invest in our parks.. more rangers better Green spaces.

Lots more people on street, lots more people exercising, I walked through Chester and seen people drinking on the street in the park and ampertherate, it looks like the goverment have taken our pubs away, so people are finding other way to socialise, but they are leaving rubbish behind. It's great people are meeting up and able to have picnics or drink, but leaving rubbish is wrong, better fines and more street cleaning, encourage more people to use these spaces to enjoy themselves, social space.
0Tom Balmost 4 years agoSeparate dog walking areas from recreation areas
Dogs are important for people as companions, but they can and do cause distress to others, and have quanitifable negative impacts of wildlife. Parks, including larger peri-urban spaces should each have specific dog walking areas, including seats, that are separate from wildlife areas, and places where outdoor games and relaxation are specified. Dog-friendly areas should be pleasant places, and not just dog toilet sites, so that dog owners can enjoy the natural scenes as much as others.
2LauraCalmost 4 years agoImprove speeding measures on Station Rd (Delamere) & local area, & work with the rangers at Delamere Forest on antisocial behaviour issues
Speeding vehicles are a massive issue on Station Road, and the 40mph limit is rarely adhered to. Since lockdown has eased there's been a huge increase in traffic here - predominantly people travelling to Delamere Forest as it's at the end of the road - and the roads have once again become very dangerous, and the local area polluted and noisy. The signage showing the 40mph limit is inadequate, and Police are only able to visit the area to carry out speed monitoring once every 6-8 weeks (if that) as they're really stretched at the moment. Something needs to be done about this. There have been so many near-misses, and trying to pull out of local properties on to the main road has become really hazardous. Furthermore, during lockdown local residents felt able to walk along the pavements safely, cycle safely on the roads, and visit the Forest to exercise. Most of us don't feel we can do that now. I no longer walk my dog (always on the lead btw) there because of the complete lack of social distancing by Forest visitors, the haphazard/dangerous parking by Forest visitors all over the verges and local side roads, speeding cars on the road outside, and the increase in antisocial behaviour both in and around the Forest (people leaving smouldering disposable bbqs on the forest floor - meaning the fire service has to be called out multiple times per week - trash and broken glass all over the place on Station Road, large groups of people cycling on the pavements, and people bringing their motorbikes to the Forest area and deliberately riding them at people, to name a few issues). Things need to change, and the Parish Council and Cheshire Council need to work with the local community and the Forest rangers in order to implement said changes. Ideas: better signage clearly showing speed limits, increased PCSO presence and speed monitoring, establishing a clear and communicative relationship between the community and Councils to get things done, volunteer litter pickers in the CW8 area, more volunteer rangers, improved safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists, better use of the community centre as a hub for discussion of all of the above.

CWaC should seek urgently to identify areas for people to grow their own food.

0Sevalmost 4 years agoClimate change measures as a priority
In the link related to the question what is most important to build a stronger future, there are many ideas linked to climate and protecting the environment. Supporting local businesses, local food, invest on low energy public transport, review insulation standards for buildings to reduce energy, invest in rain water collection , invest in technologies that will allow safe use of grey water, enforce a motor off policy on car parks, all would help in reducing carbon emissions. Then it would be great to identify the future jobs needed to support these actions and review the education needs to achieve this.
1Cllr Mandy Clareover 3 years agoProvide dedicated spaces in low income communities to bolster against the economic and health crises
These could be low-cost eco-builds that provide a base for communities to increase their knowledge and confidence in tackling the issues that directly affect them, inviting in expertise to help explore and implement solutions to the crisis that best meet the new and evolving needs of the community in relation to low income, climate, health, hunger, education, democratic voice, tackling anti-social behaviour and community safety etc. They could be managed by communities and be a home for resident-led, council and partner-supported community wealth-building, rather than part of an ‘outreach’ service.

Gordonalmost 4 years agoMore supported volunteering
The Council needs to invest more in volunteer organisers, for example Green Space Rangers so that more volunteer hours can be effectively managed. This will have the added benefit of reducing demand on health and social care are members of the community will also have improved health and wellbeing
1Jamesalmost 4 years agoJust do something
One of the better aspects of the pandemic has been people looking out for neighbours and offering help. Sometimes we can all be too backwards at asking for, or offering help from friends and neighbours. So many things that sounds small add up to bigger things. We can't all do eveything, but we should all try to: support local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, vote, give blood, recycle, home compost, walk or cycle short journeys, pick up some roadside litter ocasionally, talk to people, join a local group or society and so on.
