The Local Plan Conversation engagement exercise has now closed

Thank you to everyone who took part. A copy of the feedback report, comments on existing Local Plan policies and suggestions of sites and locations for new development and land that is important to protect, are available here. There were a number of comments that did not relate to the Local Plan but to issues dealt with by other Council departments. Where possible all these other comments have been passed to the relevant services.

The findings of this engagement were discussed by the Council’s Cabinet on 20 April 2022. Information about the meeting is available here.

Your feedback supported this discussion at Cabinet, where it was agreed that the Council commits to an update of the Local Plan (Part One) and commences initial work, including evidence gathering in advance of this, and establishes a cross-party Member Working Group. A report setting out the scope and timetable will be approved at a future Cabinet meeting.

Identifying how land can be used is central to the Local Plan. We would like to know how you think land should be used in your area.

Growth and protection

Last year the government's 'Planning for the future' consultation included proposals for changing how Local Plans are prepared, including the suggestion that land would be categorised for growth, renewal or protection. These proposals are at an early stage and no decisions have been made on changing our Local Plan.

However, it would be useful to know your views on what parts of the borough you think should be protected from future development and which areas would be good locations for future development.

  • Growth/Renewal land could include brownfield land within our towns that could be put to more productive use or undeveloped land around our settlements
  • Protected land is where development is more restricted. The government has suggested this could include Green Belt, conservation areas, areas of significant flood risk, important areas of green space, wildlife sites and areas of countryside

Use our mapping tool below, to give us your initial ideas for which areas of land could be identified for growth/renewal or protection.

Other suggestions or issues

You can also use our mapping tool to tell us about any other local concerns or suggestions about how we should plan for that area in the future.

If you would like to provide more detail about your suggestion, you can complete a form on our website here
