The Enhancing Chester City Centre Pedestrianisation engagement is now closed.
Thank you to everyone who took part. Your feedback has been considered by Cheshire West and Chester Council to help shape proposals for the enhanced pedestrianisation of Chester City Centre and inform a decision about whether to proceed with a formal order to make these changes.
A copy of the feedback is available here, which includes our response to the key messages raised and the next steps.
A statutory Highways Consultation will be carried out in early 2023 and there will be further opportunities to respond and share your views on the proposals through this consultation.
Much has changed over the last two years. The Covid-19 pandemic has made everyone think about what is important to them and how they have had to adapt their lifestyle. Our City Centre has faced the same challenges with retailers finding new ways of delivering their products and services to their customers. One of the changes we have seen in the city is an increase in the number of hospitality venues offering Alfresco drinking and dining through enhanced pedestrianisation. This has added a vibrant and exciting dynamic and has bridged the gap between the day time and night time economies, which we want to encourage and continue.
We would like to hear your views on enhancing several pedestrian access routes in Chester City Centre.
The access routes we are considering are:
Bridge Street and Watergate Street
Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and St. Werburgh Street
Frodsham Street and Foregate Street.

CLOSED: The Enhancing Chester City Centre Pedestrianisation engagement is now closed. We are preparing a report that summarises your feedback and the results from this engagement will be available in Summer 2022, alongside an update on the outcome of any decisions taken and the next steps.
Please complete this survey to share your views on the following proposals being considered to enhance several pedestrian access routes within Chester City Centre:
Bridge Street and Watergate Street (including Weaver Street loading bay) - We are considering making the temporary traffic access restrictions put in place during the pandemic a permanent change, meaning Watergate Street (from the lights at the junction with Nicholas Street) and Bridge Street (down to the rising bollards on Bridge Street) would remain closed to through traffic from 10.30am until 8.00pm, seven days a week, enabling the ongoing pedestrianisation of the area for the benefit of shoppers, hospitality and businesses alike.
Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and St. Werburgh Street (also affecting St. John Street) - We are considering making the temporary traffic access restrictions put in place during the pandemic a permanent change, meaning that Northgate Street (from the Northgate Street/St. Werburgh Street junction) and Eastgate Street would remain closed from 10.30am until 8.00pm seven days a week. Currently traffic access is also restricted on Northgate Street (from the barrier opposite the Town Hall to the junction with St Werburgh Street) and St. Werburgh Street between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Saturday. We are considering extending these access restrictions so that the same restrictions also apply on a Sunday.
Frodsham Street and Foregate Street - Currently in this area traffic access is restricted on Frodsham Street (from the junction with Victoria Place, with access allowed to supermarket car parks), along Foregate Street, to the junction with Love Street, between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Saturday. We are considering extending these access restrictions so that the same restrictions also apply on a Sunday.
