We love the stories you are adding here to Inspire Cheshire West – keep them coming! It’s heartwarming to see the way our communities are pulling together to help each other through this pandemic.

Because you’ve played such an integral part in the response to COVID-19, we wanted to let you know how you can play an equally important role in creating our borough’s future.

We know that this pandemic is not over and communities across the area still need our, and your, help, and we want to reassure you that the Council’s priority continues to be protecting lives and... Continue reading

We know that this pandemic is not over and communities across the area still need our, and your, help, and we want to reassure you that the Council’s priority continues to be protecting lives and livelihoods.

But it’s also the right time to start looking at how we can prepare the borough for a stronger future and make it an even better place to live and work.

Please share your views in the Stronger Futures engagement – and spread the word to family and friends too.

You can take part using our dedicated Stronger Futures website where there are three questions you can answer – what do you think should be the focus to build a stronger future, how do you think the Council can help and how can you and your community help?

If you know someone that does not have internet access but would be keen to take part, they can write to Stronger Futures, Insight and Intelligence, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Council Offices, 4 Civic Way, Ellesmere Port, CH65 0BE or telephone the Council’s Contact Centre on: 0300 123 8 123 and quote ‘Stronger Futures’.

For those of you who have been spending more time walking and cycling in the past two months, you may also be interested in the Council’s Walk. Ride. Thrive campaign. This aims to encourage even more people to enjoy a summer of active travel and to share their views on how investment can be made to support more walking and cycling.

We look forward to hearing from you and working together to build a stronger future for our borough.

The Council’s Occupational Therapy Team work with residents of all ages in the borough when physical and mental illness, disability, a long-term condition, or the effects of ageing prevent them from doing the activities they need or want to do.

Grace, who is 18 months old, lives with her family in Chester and is one of the team’s youngest clients. She was born very prematurely and requires 20 hours of nursing care a day due to a number of medical issues. Grace had spent the first year of her life in hospital where she lay flat for most of the time.

A member of the Occupational Therapy team visited the family just before the covid-19 restrictions were put in place to assess what support was needed to help both Grace and her family. Working with the Paediatric Physio team at the Countess of Chester Hospital, suitable seating was found for Grace that would allow her to sit in an upright supported position for feeding and playing. A floor seat was delivered to the family in March, followed by a specialist high chair that was delivered in April. Both of these seats help Grace’s posture and enable her to see and interact with the world. This has been a huge change for Grace, and she has responded brilliantly.

Grace’s mum Samantha said: “We were really thankful that Grace’s new chairs were delivered directly to us, even during the current lockdown restrictions. With the help of her carers we were able to get her set up in them straight away and she absolutely loves them. It’s made a real difference to her life. One of the things she can now do is sit by the front doorstep and watch the world go by, which she loves doing.”

Jeannie and Mary , two residents of Malpas who had both had enough of the mounting litter during lockdown on old hall street , decided they wanted to do something about it.

Taking the litter picker by the handle, they set to the task in hand and six bags of rubbish later the area was left looking much more presentable .

Jeannie and Mary have both set a shining example of positive community spirit and I would like to say thank you to them both .

On 18th March, my flights for a spring break road trip around rural Halkidiki, Greece were cancelled. I decided to still take my annual leave from work as the country was in crisis and lockdown followed soon after Monday 23rd March, the day I was due to fly to Greece. I was already committing to a weekly food shop for my 95 year old housebound Auntie living on the Wirral. That week, I scaled up my food shopping to cover another Auntie in Chester, my parents in Chester and their elderly neighbour. I was really enjoying helping others, so when... Continue reading

I was really enjoying helping others, so when I noticed an advert from Cheshire Voluntary Action, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Chester Mutual Aid, I literally jumped at the opportunity, the same with the NHS GoodSAM scheme. I've now completed 97 food shopping deliveries for family, friends, neighbours and the local community, 21 prescription deliveries and made 32 Check In and Chat phone calls to those shielding at home since 19th March. I'm featured in a brief post on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/MandSnews/status/1255101741823074304?s=09

However, the best and proudest moment, I'm literally one of 100's of volunteers in the community of Chester giving their free time to help others in the community. I've made new friends for life and I can hand on heart say that volunteering in the community was the best decision of 2020.

I'll remember this year, this global pandemic crisis and national emergency not just for the number of lives so sadly lost which has been absolutely devastating, but also for the number of lives we managed to save, by keeping so many people in our communities safe at home. "Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives." A big tick for this one.

I've spent over £3,500 on food and essentials for family, friends, neighbours and the community since 19th March, receiving payment for each food shop based on the receipt, it's worked exceptionally well. I'm sat here absolutely amazed at what I've been able to achieve. At my peak, I managed 6 food shop deliveries in 1 day. This required so much planning and organisation, all my management skills utilised to the max, but I did it.

I would really like to thank everyone involved with the Chester Mutual Aid for all their support, what an amazing team of experts in their field, community leaders and ambassadors, professionals and community volunteers. A truly amazing effort from everyone involved, whether leafletting their local area, making phone calls, supporting community food hubs, collecting and delivering prescriptions, food shopping deliveries or dog walking, an absolutely outstanding community response to an unprecedented global pandemic crisis and national emergency.

We are Pamela and Joanne and we launched our new business, Apollo Care Chester home care services, a few weeks before the Covid-19 outbreak, little did we know that what was waiting around the corner for us!

So whilst waiting for our CQC Registration to enable us to provide care we looked at how we could help the local community in a time of crisis.

We looked at the support available to the local residents surrounding our office in Mollington and discovered that they had nothing in place at this time, so we initiated our own voluntary service by posting 250 flyers offering to provide a shopping, medication collections and a companionship telephone call service, to anyone that may be at risk and vulnerable.

We also created a community link by putting a post box in the local ‘Book Stop’ (a delightfully converted bus stop that residents use as a library) along with some of our postcards, also a lovely local lady made some beautiful hand-made cards, which were left for residents to write messages to their friends and neighbours in the villages and we delivered them on our rounds.

We also contacted St Oswald’s Primary School who were only too happy to get involved with the children posting their beautiful pictures and heart-warming messages to those that may be lonely, we then passed these on to brighten the day of those that were battling with isolation and loneliness in these difficult times.

We went on to work to partnership with a local Parish Councillor to gain support for residents from a Mutual Aid Group and enable them to form their own volunteer group.

It has been overwhelming to see the community come together and to witness the wonderful acts of kindness that have transpired and how kindness is contagious.

We have now received our registration and are providing care to the community to enable them to live safer, happier, healthier lives.

Stay safe and keep smiling :)
