Climate Emergency

The Climate Emergency facing our world is a very real issue, but there is plenty we can do to take action to help protect our planet.

Cheshire West and Chester Council declared a Climate Emergency in the borough in 2019 and put forward its Climate Emergency Response plan, which aims to help the borough become carbon neutral by 2045.

This is a space to share ideas, stories and tips about what you are doing locally to reduce your carbon emissions and impact on the environment. Now's the time to react and play your part to make our borough carbon neutral.

Residents, community groups, schools and businesses across the borough are busy playing their part to protect our local environment and reduce their impact on the planet by reducing their carbon emissions.

Lots of people taking action together can make a big impact and we want to hear all about the things you are doing. It could be a short tip, a blog or vlog on a certain topic, a pledge to say what you hope to achieve or about an event you’ve organised.

By sharing your story, you could inspire others across the borough to take action today and help us achieve our ambition of being a carbon neutral borough.

Jane Harrad-Roberts, MD of Marketing PRojects and Project Director of the Green Skills Youth Conference added; “We look forward to partnering with the Chamber to deliver a successful youth conference in Green Careers Week on November 6^th, to a proven format; workshops and games in the morning, discussion on careers and the bigger picture at lunchtime, and a careers fair in the afternoon with leading, local organisations across a complete span of sectors.”
There are a number of ways to get involved:
- Free Student Tickets – Schools, academies and colleges attend free (with a refundable £250 booking fee). Home educated students are also invited from Year 9 upwards.
- Sponsorship Opportunities – 5 places available for organisations wanting to play a leading role in the day. Sponsors feature prominently before, after and on the day.
- Career Fair Stands (£99) – 15 stands available for employers who want to showcase their sector and speak directly with students exploring future pathways.
- Ensure your family, with student career decisions to come, is represented at the conference. There is also a booklet for each student on how to get the maximum benefit from a careers fair.

A University of Chester academic who has grown an internationally recognised mint collection and won back-to-back Royal Horticultural Society awards is inspiring the next generation through a biodiversity initiative with schools.
Dr Si Poole, Associate Professor of Cultural Education, has developed the Intmintmint Biodiversity Challenge in partnership with primary schools in Cheshire and beyond to explore practical, engaging ways of enhancing the natural environment by planting and caring for varieties of Mentha (mint), and designing new gardens. Dr Si Poole, Associate Professor of Cultural Education, has developed the Intmintmint Biodiversity Challenge in partnership with primary schools in Cheshire and beyond to explore practical, engaging ways of enhancing the natural environment by planting and caring for varieties of Mentha (mint), and designing new gardens. The project also aims to connect pupils to growing for wellbeing - using planting, scent and seasonal change to spark curiosity, mindfulness, and everyday connection with nature.
The initiative focuses on mint with Si having cultivated nearly 200 varieties at his Mintopia plant nursery, recognised as a National Plant Collection^® by Plant Heritage. National Plant Collections are registered and documented collections of a group of plants, celebrated internationally as contributing to conservation.
The Intmintmint Biodiversity Challenge was featured as part of the Mintopia exhibit within the Plant Heritage zone at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Badminton Flower Show this summer. The exhibit was awarded a RHS Silver-Gilt medal, repeating Si’s success in winning a RHS Silver-Gilt accolade for another educational Mintopia exhibit last year at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival.
The Intmintmint project, currently supporting 23 schools, sees Si work closely with a different school each year, with the project currently supporting about £15,000 of development per school.
In previous years, he has worked with The Oaks Community Primary School in Ellesmere Port and Malpas Alport Endowed Primary School, and this year he will work with Cherry Grove Primary School in Chester. Si has also expanded the initiative into schools in Wales, delivering the programme bilingually in English and Welsh.
Alongside the schools and exhibition work, Si is also undertaking mint trials as an expert specialist at RHS Bridgewater, helping to explore and assess mint varieties and their potential in gardens.
Si said: “It’s exciting to see what began as an interest in gardening and mint varieties become what it is today and to be able to share what I’ve learned and created with schools, and through exhibitions and trials.
“Our work with schools and communities is rooted in a shared commitment to biodiversity, wellbeing, and creative education. From a single potted mint to a fully co-designed sensory garden, we use Mentha as a starting point for further learning and connection.
“Mintopian schools began with a question: what happens when you hand a child a pot of mint and invite them to care for it? The answer - it turns out - is a growing network of schools, educators, researchers, and communities across the UK who are rethinking how we learn with plants, and it continues to branch out in new directions every season.”
David Wearing, Headteacher at The Oaks Community Primary School, said: “We’ve really valued being part of the Intmintmint Biodiversity Challenge and the way Si’s work has encouraged our children to think differently about nature, biodiversity and the spaces around them. At The Oaks, we want children to feel that they can make a genuine difference to their environment through simple, practical actions.
“One of the lovely outcomes has been our growing collection of different varieties of mint, which the children help to care for and propagate. Rather than simply growing plants, they are learning how to take cuttings, create new plants and then share them with others or take them home, extending that connection with nature beyond the school gates.
“The project also complements the development of our Calm Hub and our wider work around outdoor learning and wellbeing. We’re increasingly using planting, nature and quieter outdoor spaces to give children opportunities to slow down, notice what is around them and feel connected to their environment. What we particularly like about the project is that biodiversity becomes something children actively participate in rather than something they simply learn about in a classroom.”
Nic Wetton, Headteacher at Malpas Alport Endowed Primary School, added: “Working with Si allowed our pupils to fully embrace the challenge of biodiversity within our school grounds and areas of concrete became a hive of plant and insect life.”

Many everyday journeys in our borough are made by car, but not everyone can easily walk, wheel or cycle. This research project, led by a PhD student at the University of Chester, is exploring how people usually get around their local area, and what helps or makes it harder to use more active or lower‑carbon options where possible.
We are currently inviting adults who live in Blacon or Newton & Hoole to take part in an interview about their usual travel, whether they mainly drive, use public transport, walk, wheel or cycle. You do not need to be physically active... Continue reading

As part of Paddle UK's Clear Access, Clear Waters campaign, Deva Canoe Club members took to the water in a mix of canoes, whitewater and sea kayaks to clean the river.

Sadly there had been sewage discharges in the early morning after a thunderstorm. Gloves and litter pickers were made available and, after a safety briefing, members set off both up and down stream from the club, returning after a couple of hours with a fine selection of bottles, cans and plastic items. Bagged, these were left at a pre-arranged point for the council to collect.

Powered by Eco Communities UK and forming part of national Great Big Green Week, the festival will bring together local organisations, businesses, artists, campaigners and community groups from across the region to showcase practical ideas and positive solutions for greener living.
Festival organisers say the event is designed to be welcoming and accessible for everyone; whether people want practical tips for living more sustainably, opportunities to connect with local groups, or simply a fun and inspiring family day out.
The opening festival day on Sunday 7 June will launch the programme with community activities, creative events and opportunities for residents to explore local sustainability initiatives happening across Chester and Cheshire.
The second festival day on Sunday 14 June will expand the programme with a full day of talks, interactive workshops, eco stalls, repair and reuse initiatives, arts activities and community conversations focused on shaping a greener future for the city.
Helen Tandy, Founding Director of Eco Communities UK, said:
“Chester Green Festival is all about bringing people together to explore practical, positive ways we can create a greener future for our communities.

Built on the legacy of Green Expo 2022-4 and Chester Green Weekend 2025 for the national Great Big Green Week celebrations, the festival aims to highlight the growing number of community-led projects and organisations already helping Cheshire become a more sustainable and connected place to live.

Chester based Eco Communities UK has appealed for support towards the last £1,500 of its Spacehive crowd funding initiative with Cheshire West and Chester Council. So far it has raised 85% of its target but needs the additional donations to achieve 100% in the next 2 days.

The campaign attracted many backers from across the community, unlocking funding from Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Climate Change Emergency Fund and Community Innovation Fund. The funding will support Chester Green Festival in the city on June 7^th and 14^th, and 4 new Community Refill Hubs across Cheshire with reusable Party kits for hire and sewing repair initiatives with training.

Helen Tandy from Eco Communities UK said: “Communities across Cheshire West are calling for practical, everyday ways to move away from a throwaway culture and towards a more circular way of living – where items are repaired, reused and shared rather than binned.”
“Previous generations repaired and repurposed. We want to bring that mindset back to Cheshire West,” Helen added. “Some of these projects already exist locally. Others are still dreams but we can only move forward with community support.”
